Armageddon
Armageddon is popularly conceived as the world's
final battle field, on which the forces
of evil will ultimately be destroyed.
It is mentioned only once in the Bible, in Revelation
16:16 - And he gathered them
together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue
Armageddon.
The Hebrew name is properly Har
Magedon, meaning 'Mountain of Megiddo'
or 'Mountain of Assembly of Troops'. The
significance of this name is seen in Revelation
16:13-17, where
the evil spirits that have emerged from the mouths of the
Dragon and the Beast and the False Prophet 'go
forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world,
to gather them to the battle of that great day of God
Almighty'.
Armageddon is probably not a literal place, but
symbolizes the ultimate spiritual conflict of good and
evil.
The word Armageddon is sometimes pronounced 'Armagideon',
as if linking it to Gideon, whose story
is told in the book of Judges. Gideon was called to
liberate his people from the Midianites, whom he
conquered miraculously with an army of just three hundred
men.
See the song 'Armageddon' by Bunny Wailer.
